Born Thalen of House Xenidor, a child of Meridian's Rest — a wealthy desert trade town built on water rights and caravan hospitality. A long time ago, the town was destroyed, and Thalen was its only survivor. Or so they thought.
It is said Ourania, Keeper of Thresholds, lent Thalen her own wings the night disaster struck — saving them from a catastrophe no one else escaped. Whether the story is true, in a way it does not matter. Thalen took a new name and a vow: to serve. And so they serve.
The Order of Ourania is Hilltop's standing army of devoted Sentinels — part knightly order, part monastery, austere in its lower ranks and imposing in its higher ones. Aegis has served it ever since, and grown quietly certain of one thing: the Order may not actually represent Ourania. Their faith in the goddess herself has not wavered.
The binding rite overlaid the Order's shield-and-eye sigil across the sacred markings they were born with — uniform, symmetrical, official. But the old patterns still show where the Order's sigils will not reach: the hairline, the nape, the inside of one wrist. Aegis keeps those. They are the only thing that is theirs.
A mace, a round shield, and the promise made to Ransom before the chaos: take me home. Aegis has spent a very long time looking for the person to deliver it to. The party has changed that arithmetic — for the first time, there is more than one promise worth keeping.
