Ransom grew up in the deep desert with nothing to his name — a scrapper, foraging through wreckages, buried caverns, and half-swallowed ruins for anything worth a coin. The sand kept the secrets; he kept the coins.
Much of the desert's poor live in a derailed trade train, sunk and half-buried where the sandstorms took the tracks. Parts of it sit on land belonging to Aegis' family — and through that unlikely charity, two wanderers became fast friends.
One find he could never sell: a relic marked with serpentine emblems and a strange, quiet aura. He kept it close instead of trading it. It was the last thing he held when the world went wrong.
Ransom died in the chaos. Aegis alone walked away. What the stories do not agree on is what came after — only that Ransom, centuries by some counts, walked out of the relic into a world that no longer remembered him.
He carries a whip, a small dagger, a gambeson, and the growing sense that his patron's gift was never free. The snake-shaped thing that saved him has never yet explained itself — and he has learned not to rush it.
